Owners of electric cars can get a €600 grant from today to help cover the cost of installing a home charger.

The move, which will apply to anyone buying an electric car, new or used, is an attempt to increase the popularity of zero-emission vehicles.

Irish motorists are beginning to make the switch to electric, though at a far slower pace than had been hoped. Sales in November of last year were up 58 per cent. A total of 603 electric cars were registered, compared with 392 for the whole of 2016.

The Fianna Fáil-Green Party coalition set a target in 2008 of having electric cars make up 10 per cent of all vehicles in Ireland by 2020, equivalent to about 230,000 cars.
